Weekend violence in Chicago killed an 11-year-old girl who was at a slumber party, officials said Sunday.
Shamiya Adams was playing with her friends at the house when a bullet came ripped through a wall and hit her head. She was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital where she was declared dead.
"A great-grandmother should not have to bury her great grandchild," Shamiya's great-grandmother, Lourene Miller, told ABC 7. "This is a pain I can't even explain it hurts so bad."
She stressed on the fact that there was a need to prevent gun violence.
At least 40 people were shot and four killed during the weekend violence, reports the NBC affiliate in Chicago.
More than 20 people, including a 12-year-old girl, were wounded in less than 12 hours during the weeken, the Chicago Tribune reported.
The girl was shot in the foot when unknown shooters opened fire on her along with a 33-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man on Friday afternoon.
Investigators believe the bullet was shot from a vacant lot across the street from the home in an area plagued by gangs and violence.
"[Adams] was vibrants and energetic," said Tommie Robinson of First Baptist Congregational. "She loved coming to church."
"It just leaves a hole in your soul," said Rev. George Daniels, reports NBC Chicago. "You can't find words to explain such a tragedy."
Family and friends of the little girl were seemingly furious by the shooting as many gathered for a Sunday vigil to remember Adams. "I'm angry because she never did anything to anybody," said 11-year-old Nashaunti Baker. "She didn't deserve it."
