Verizon is taking a huge leap in the wireless broadband industry by improving its FiOS connections so the upload and download speeds are equally fast.
Verizon, the leader in the US wireless industry, announced that its FiOS connections will be improved significantly, so much that the upload speeds will be equivalent to the download speeds on a network. This will improve the overall user experience for various activities that involve sending videos and backing up files on cloud storage.
New customers signing up for the Verizon's bundle services can take advantage of the improved bandwidth starting Monday, while existing subscribers can avail the opportunity only after a few months. The cheapest plan offers 25 Mbps download and upload speed, Associated Press reported, Monday. The basic plan is upgraded in terms of speed from 15 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload speed.
With the growing popularity of online streaming and cloud storage, people are less dependent on downloading content or storing large files on computer hard drives. The improvement to the upload speeds on Verizon's network will attract new customers who watch online movies and carry most operations online.
For example, the boosted upload speeds will drastically reduce the time taken to upload files. Basic plan subscribers can upload 3GB HD video in just 16 minutes, instead of having to wait for one hour. On the top-tier with 500 Mbps plan, the upload time for the same video will be just 50 seconds.
Better uploads will also be beneficiary for online gamers. Having multiple devices connected in a home network should not affect the streaming speeds vastly.
With the upgraded connections, Verizon is hoping to gain an edge over its competitors mainly from the cable sector. While Verizon's top tier offers uploads as high as 500 Mbps, cable uploads exhaust at about 35 Mbps. The carrier has more than 6 million FiOS internet customers and will most likely attract new customers with its significant leap.
