Two masked thieves robbed an Atlantic City casino at gunpoint early Monday morning, making away with over $180,000 in cash as they fled the scene.
At least one of the suspects was seen holding a weapon as they robbed Ceasars casino at the New Jersey-based resort, the Press of Atlantic City reported. The suspects took two plastic boxes with a total of $181,000 before they escaped in a car at around 6:20 a.m., according to police.
Police did not disclose any details of the robbery as they search for the masked suspects.
Caesars Atlantic City, which takes up an entire block, includes a hotel, a spa and restaurants. Since the case is being handled by the State Police Casino Gaming Bureau, the robbery most likely took place in the casino part of the establishment, according to the Press of Atlantic City.
Atlantic City police are in charge of the hotel's public areas.
The robbery is a severe blow to the New Jersey resort, which is currently in the midst of a financial crisis, USA Today reported. Many of its casinos have seen a severe decline in revenue over the last eight years, with two of the oldest, Showboat and Trump Plaza, set to close this fall.
Another hotel, the 1,400 room Revel, recently filed for bankruptcy for the second time. It too will close if no buyers come forward, according to the Associated Press.
