Microsoft has rolled out an update to Skype for Android app to facilitate automatic contact syncing.
Microsoft, the software giant, rolled out an update to Skype for Android, Wednesday, to enable automatic contact syncing. With this, Microsoft hopes to connect more users on its video calling platform through mobile.
The update, which brings the app version to 5.0, makes it easier for Skype users to find new contacts from the device's address book. The app will match the contacts to people list and also check to see if new people from the phone's address book have joined Skype. The new feature is not entirely new, as other apps like Facebook and WhatsApp offer similar contact syncing feature.
"Helping you keep in touch with the people who matter most in your life has always been a key goal for us here at Skype. But with more than 300 million users, we know that sometimes finding your friends on Skype can be a challenge," Pierre-Eric Jacoupy, senior product marketing manager at Skype, announced in a company's blog post, Wednesday. "Today, we're thrilled to announce a brand new feature for Android users that makes it easier than ever to find the people you're looking for on Skype."
Microsoft said the update will be rolled out to all Android users in the coming months. However, the app's "What's New" section in Google Play Store shows the update is already available and ready to download.
After downloading the updated version of Skype on Android, the app will prompt users to verify the phone number. The app will then start matching the contacts between Skype and the device's address book. New matches will appear in Skype's contact list.
Microsoft is not imposing the new feature for Android users, as they can always opt out of the feature by going into the settings. But the Redmond software giant promises not to spam users' contacts in any way.
The new feature is currently available only to Android users, but the company will roll out to other platforms in the coming months.
