Jon Stewart Starts $10 Billion Fake Kickstarter Campaign to Buy CNN

Jon Stewart is looking to make CNN a better news program by buying it.

On Tuesday's episode of The Daily Show, Stewart said he will launch a $10 billion Kickstarter campaign to buy the cable news channel, one that he has been a longtime critic of, according to The Los Angeles Times.

He discussed the $80 billion bid offered by Rupert Murdoch, CEO of 21st Century Fox, to buy CNN, which was rejected by management from Time Warner. Despite the offer being turned down, Murdoch has been reported to not be giving up on the purchase, and buying Time Warner offers the possibly of Murdoch selling CNN to keep it from competing with Fox News, another news channel Murdoch owns. The possibility of CNN being up for grabs caught Stewart's interest.

To further promote the mock campaign, the Daily Show created a standalone website, LetsBuyCNN.com, VentureBeat reported. However, the site is actually just a photoshopped version of a real Kickstarter campaign page.

"CNN, America's first 24-hour cable news network, has been terrible for many, many years," LetsBuyCNN.com reads. "Does it have to be that way? Who knows, maybe it does. So let's find out for ourselves!"

Users won't be able to actually contribute toward the campaign's goal, TIME reported. The site allows backers who contribute $1 billion to host a Hunger Games-style fight to the death between CNN anchors.

CNN is currently reported to have a value of close to $10 billion.

"It's a lot of money for anyone," Stewart said on Tuesday. "But not a lot of money for everyone."
