Google Maps Debuts 'Explore' Button in App Update

Google has updated its Maps service with a new button called "Explore" to make information about nearby attractions available to Android and iOS application users.

App users can find the new button on the bottom right corner of the map and use it to find information on the best hot spots nearby, according to PC Magazine.

"With Explore as your guide, you'll see different places and activities that adapt to each area and moment throughout the day," said Taj Campbell, product manager at Google Maps.

Google said in a blog post that Explore "also works when you're browsing other neighborhoods and cities on the map so you can plan your day's outing or daydream about your next vacation," International Business Times reported.

Explore also comes with the ability to provide users with a variety of information about their current location, such as views for restaurants in the area, traffic updates and train schedules.

The update gives an extra capability to Android users by letting them tap the 'My Location' button, or the blue dot on the map, to access and share details about their current location.

Users are able to find more options by expanding their range from a five-minute walk to a 20-minute drive. Suggestions for hotspots change based on certain factors, such as time and weather conditions. Users are suggested to sign into Google Maps and turn on location reporting and history to get the best results.

"So don't worry about wandering over to a breakfast spot for dinner, or arriving at the park just in time for a thunderstorm," Campbell said.

Since the app will learn the user's preference overtime, users are also suggested to confirm all of their stops within Google Maps, PC Magazine reported.

The update follows Google's release of several updates for its mobile version of Google Maps, which include being able to check the status of Uber cars and upcoming schedules for buses and trains close by. The Android app for maps also received an update last week to let cyclists find bicycle directions, elevation details and elevation comparisons for different routes.
