An allegedly drunk man who got into a road rage altercation on a Florida road ended up being run over by his own truck, police said.
The melee began on Tuesday when 48-year-old Joseph Carl drove his pickup truck into a car that was stopped at a red light in Gainesville a little before 7 p.m., according to a police report obtained by The Gainesville Sun.
Carl hopped out of his truck, stalked over to the car in front and banged on the window. The woman was scarred by the man's yelling and drove off.
In the meantime, Carl's Doge 1500 pickup remained behind the woman's vehicle. As she drove off, his truck, which he apparently forgot to put in park, began inching forward, according to the police report.
Carl, who was left standing in front of his truck, tried to halt the approaching vehicle with his hands. But his efforts proved futile and the truck ran over its owner during that evening's rainfall. He was later transported to UF Health Shands Hospital to receive treatment for a fractured foot and hand, the newspaper reported.
Gainesville police arrived at the scene on NW 43rd Street to find Carl unable to walk straight. Police also found several empty beer cans in the truck as well as an unfinished can of Miller High Life.
When asked about the beer cans, Carl said he only drinks while driving home, despite the fact that he initially said he doesn't drink and drive, The Gainesville Sun reported.
Police made Carl perform a sobriety test. Carl failed and was arrested. His blood-alcohol level later came back as .22, way over twice the state legal limit.
Carl was charged with DUI and DUI with property damage, the newspaper reported.
According to the police report, this isn't Carl's first incident involving suspected drinking while driving. Carl's license was suspended in 1991 because he did not give authorities a sample of his breath.
He also refused to provide police with a breath sample during Tuesday's arrest.
