More news from the MLB rumor mill has surfaced, as it has been reported that the Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Cardinals, and Seattle Mariners are all looking to execute trades before next Thursday's deadline.
Believe it or not, Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Jake Peavy could be a desired trade option for a number of other teams despite his 1-9 record this year. The Mariners, Dodgers, Pirates, Cardinals, Giants, and other contenders are looking to add one more reliable arm to their pitching staff. Peavy's 13 years of experience could prove valuable towards the end of the season. In 20 starts this year, Peavy has four no-decisions in games where he gave up two or less runs in at least six innings pitched and has four losses giving up either two or three runs in the same duration of innings. His ERA (4.72) and WHIP (1.42) may not show it, but Peavy has 12 quality starts.
The Cardinals, a team that could make a push for Peavy, are currently in search of a catcher ever since Yadier Molina was diagnosed with a torn ligament in his right thumb that will require surgery. He's expected to miss 8-12 weeks. Tony Cruz has been calling the shots behind the plate in his place, but Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said "we want to give ourselves the best chance to win," when speaking of the team's catcher situation. Teams that might be willing to trade their catchers include the Texas Rangers (J.P. Arencibia) and the Minnesota Twins (Kurt Suzuki).
The Seattle Mariners already made a trade earlier on Thursday to acquire former first baseman Kendrys Morales, but they're still looking to add a pitcher and have not been discreet about talking with the Tampa Bay Rays about David Price. Reports also mentioned that Seattle has asked the Rays about second baseman Ben Zobrist and also inquired about Phillies outfielder Marlon Byrd and Rockies outfielder Drew Stubbs. Their offense is struggling a bit, as they've lost four of their last five series including a marathon weekend against the Angels. Robinson Cano is the only starter that is hitting over .300 for the ball club.
