Michigan Man Out For Run Mauled To Death By 2 Dogs

A Michigan man was mauled to death by two dogs that attacked him while he was jogging on Wednesday, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Craig Sytsma, of Livonia, was running along a dirt path on Thomas Road in Metamora when two, 3-year-old cane corsos running along the same road attacked him.

Neighbors in the area fired shots to scare the dogs as they mauled the 46-year-old. The dogs fled to their owner's home and left Sytsma unconscious, the newspaper reported.

The victim was transported to a local hospital where he died Wednesday night from his wounds, Metamora Township police said.

"He was jogging, doing what everybody else does out there, running and riding bikes," Officer Sean Leathers told the Detroit Free Press.

Police said after the attack the owner brought the animals to the Lapeer County Animal Shelter, where they are currently being held. The cane corsos, a breed similar to mastiffs, are to be put down depending on whether or not the owner chooses to give them up.

Criminal charges could also be brought pending a police investigation. The owner, whose name has not been released, has obtained an attorney, the newspaper reported.

Cane corsos typically weigh between 90 and 100 pounds. They are originally from Italy, where they served as property watchdogs and hunted wild boars, according to the American Kennel Club.

Lapeer Detective Jason Parks said the dogs involved in the attack are muscular and hostile.

"They definitely reach when people are inside the room...They're aggressive dogs," he told the Detroit Free Press.

After the incident reports revealed that one of the dogs attacked an Oxford woman two years ago. April Smith suffered severe bite marks to her leg and brought a lawsuit against the owner, which is now settled.

"It's just crazy to me," Smith told the Detroit Free Press. "Animal control should have done something. It should have never gone this far. The fact this has led to a death, it's sickening."
