There are a lot of countries that find eating dogs acceptable, and John Stutter from CNN thinks America should consider that option as well.
Stutter stated in an opinion piece for CNN that there are several benefits to putting dogs on the menu, such as it being better than euthanization, which is done to 1.2 million dogs each year, according to The Inquisitr.
"Would eating them be so different?" he asked. "It actually could be seen as helpful."
Stutter also cited an argument that vegetarian and novelist Jonathan Safran Foer made in his book Eating Animals, in which Foer said euthanizing pets was just as bad as throwing away millions of pounds of meat each year.
Stutter acknowledges that eating dogs would be considered cruel and disgusting in a country that not only spends $58.5 billion on pets each year, but also gives them Christmas presents, The Inquisitr reported. However, he argues that people should be less mad at the idea of eating dogs and more outraged at how dogs are "smashed into cages; suffocated; skinned alive; strung up and beaten."
"Unless you're vegetarian or vegan, you don't have any moral high ground to stand on," he added. "Here is the United States, a place with an unhealthy and ridiculously hipster bacon obsession (witness: bacon donuts, bacon pie, bacon in bloody marys), eating dog could be seen as a reasonable alternative to pig, which is another highly intelligent animal, capable of being a companion to the likes of George Clooney."
Stutter said Americans should think more about we don't eat dog meat but eat meat from other animals like cow and pig, asking "Is it because we spend so much time with dogs - looking into their eyes, talking to them, walking them, picking up their crap."
