‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ Trailer (VIDEO): Charlize Theron, Tom Hardy Star in Explosive Sneak Peek

The first trailer for the post-apocalyptic action movie, "Mad Max: Fury Road," was released at San Diego Comic-Con on Sunday, July 27 to rave reviews. The sneak peek showed Tom Hardy (Mad Max) and Charlize Theron (commander Imperator Furiosa) fighting to survive in a post-apocalyptic world.

In the trailer Max is seen in several car chase scenes before being captured and tortured. Director George Miller appeared at Comic-Con to talk about the reboot. In the original, released in 1980, Mad Max was played by Mel Gibson.

"It was very familiar," he said about returning to the franchise, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "A lot of time has passed. Technology has changed. It was an interesting thing to do. Crazy, but interesting."

Miller said the reboot extends on the original story but is not necessarily within the same realm as the rest of the "Mad Max" series.

"Of course it's based on the same character that they'll play, the lone warrior in the wasteland disengaged from the rest of the world," Miller said in a press conference, via The Verge. "But naturally Tom brings his Tom Hardy-ness to it, and the story is different to some degree. The character is different to some degree."

"Mad Max: Fury Road" is the fourth film in the Mad Max franchise and will hit theaters May 15, 2015.

The film also stars model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley as Splendid, Zoe Kravitz as Toast, Nicholas Hoult as Nux, Riley Kenough as Capable and Nathan Jones as Rictus Erectus..
