With all the preparation that goes into professional baking, the last thing one could possibly anticipate is a hurricane.
Monday night's season premiere episode of "Cake Boss" on TLC threw light on how Buddy Valastro and his team at Carlo's Bakery in Hoboken, New Jersey, dealt with their aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
A sneak peak of the episode revealed what the team was up against. "It's two days after Hurricane Sandy and we're running a whole bakery with one generator," said Valastro. "It's not only about the ovens and lights, but you can't run nothing without power."
Dealing with basic problems like no internet from where to source logos for a cake design, the fourth-generation baker, though, was undeterred. "Whatever we have to do to get these cakes made, we will do," he said. Thankfully, the bakery's transformer escaped any damage and operations were back up and running soon enough.
A review of the episode on The Examiner added: "Residents of Hoboken did not all have power restored as quickly as the shop, but Buddy and his team took boxes of cookies to the people who were still without their power. The entire staff was happy to give back to the community that gives so much to them."
At the time of the hurricane last year, Valastro said in a statement, ""Hoboken is in my heart, and I'm devastated to see the city suffer like this - but know we'll all come back stronger than ever. Me, my family, and the entire Carlo's Bakery crew extend our thoughts and prayers to everyone impacted by the hurricane. The bakery team is accounted for and safe, and are working together to help each other out. Also, the store did not suffer any serious damage, and we look forward to serving the community again soon."
This is the sixth season of "Cake Boss". In the next episode, Valastro and his team are asked to make a special "Welcome Back" cake for "Good Morning America" anchor Robin Roberts, who returned to the show after battling ill health for some time.
