Last night the Diamondbacks, Rockies and Angels witnessed some of their star players suffer injuries that could keep them out of the lineup for the next few days as they hope the disabled list will be avoided.
Going into the eighth inning last night, the Diamondbacks held a 4-1 lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates, but that would soon change. The Pirates scored three runs in the top of the eighth to tie the game at four, and then tacked on another five in the top of the ninth to take a 9-4 lead. With little hope going into the bottom of the ninth, the night got even worse for the Diamondbacks.
With one out and Pirates reliever Ernesto Frieri on the mound, Paul Goldschmidt stepped into the batters box. Frieri delivered a pitch high and inside that hit Goldschmidt on the left hand, and although he appeared to be OK, he underwent X-rays after the game and the results were inconclusive. The team plans to find out more information on Saturday and hopes there's no fracture. The first baseman's status remains in doubt for tonight' game.
In Detroit, Justin Verlander and the Tigers defeated the Colorado Rockies 4-2, but not before Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez suffered yet another injury this season. Gonzalez has had a down year and also missed a month after having a surgical procedure on his left index finger that removed a 'fatty mass with tentacles.' Doctors said it was a giant cell tumor, according to USA Today. The outfielder could now miss more time after making a diving catch last night and injuring his right ankle, which was previously sprained last Saturday. Manager Walt Weiss said Gonzalez's ankle 'didn't look good' and they're expecting more news today.
In Tampa last night, the Angels defeated the Rays 5-3 behind home runs from Mike Trout and Josh Hamilton, but Hamilton suffered a bruised left middle finger after being hit by a pitch in the seventh inning. Rays reliever Jeff Beliveau beamed Hamilton with a fastball on the left hand. The Angels outfielder is day-to-day but it's feared he may have suffered a broken finger because X-rays revealed a fracture. However, doctors are trying to decipher whether or not the fracture is new or old, as Hamilton suffered a fracture on the same finger a few years ago. The Angels hope to hear good news about Hamilton's injury on Saturday.
As the Diamondbacks, Rockies and Angels await news, they'll have to continue moving forward with or without their star players.
