Singer Michael Johns died at the age of 35 on Friday, Aug. 1. The "American Idol" alum reportedly died in his sleep after suffering from an ankle injury earlier. A source told TMZ that the injury led to a blood clot.
The news was confirmed on Twitter by a representative of Johns's fan site who tweeted, "It is with a heavy heart and inconsolable sadness that we confirm the passing of our friend Michael Johns."
Back in 2008 he finished in 8th place on "American Idol" during Season 7. Following his shocking exit, Johns continued to make music and released a Christmas song called "Another Christmas" that same year.
All the proceeds went towards Lou Gehrig's disease. In 2009 Johns recorded an album titled "Hold Back My Heart" and in 2012 he released an EP, "Love & Sex." According to People magazine, he also wrote songs for films and documentaries.
On July 10, Johns tweeted that he was getting ready to make some new music.
"Headed to the studio to work on new song called 'Reckless' been waiting a long time for this one," he posted.
"He was a great talent and dear friend. My boys and I are devastated," executive producer Nigel Lythgoe told TMZ.
"Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star Yolanda Foster posted on Twitter, "RIP our beautiful friend @michael_johns. You will live in our hearts forever @AmericanIdol." Her music producer husband, David, often worked with Johns.
He is survived by his wife of seven years, Stacy Vuduris.
