A veterinarian in Mexico was reported last weekend by police to have killed himself by shooting himself in the head while posing for a Facebook selfie with a pistol.
21-year-old Oscar Otero Aguilar was said to have been drinking with his friends in Mexico City when he pointed his pistol at his head for the photo, according to the New York Daily News. He was hit in the temple by the 0.45 calibur gun after it discharged.
Officers arrived to the scene after getting calls from neighbors who heard the gunshot. They found that the young man was still alive, but they were sadly unable to save him.
Aguilar has previously taken selfies that were less dangerous, posing in front of cars and motorcycles. The police said Aguilar was "waving it around" while trying to take the photo. A neighbor who was close to the scene described what happened soon after the incident took place, Betabeat reported.
"I heard a gunshot, and then I heard somebody screaming and realized somebody had been hurt," the neighbor said. "I called the police and when they arrived they found that he was still alive."
Aguilar unfortunately died while he was being brought to the hospital.
An autopsy is set to take place next week. A spokesman for the Ministry of Public Security said Aguilar's death looked like it was an accident, the New York Daily News reported.
Police have detained Abner Campos Vives, one of Aguilar's friends that he was drinking with, for questioning, but they were unable to detain another friend, only known by his nickname "El Paco," who ran away shortly after the incident.
