New York Hotel Charges Guests $500 If They Post Bad Reviews Online

An upstate New York hotel is charging for negative feedback.

Union Street Guesthouse in Hudson, NY is threatening to charge couples who book weddings at their hotel $500 for each negative review, reported Pix-11.

The hotel's website states, "there will be a $500 dollar fine that will be deducted from your deposit for every negative review of USGH placed on any Internet site by anyone in your party and/or attending your wedding even if you stay here to attend a wedding anywhere in the area and leave us a negative review on any internet site you agree to a $500 fine for each negative review."

But that's not all. According to Page Six, the innkeepers will comment back on negative reviews and say "she made all of this up," and "mean spirited nonsense."

Guests are reportedly appalled by this policy, with some even fighting against the Union Street Guesthouse's rules.

Rabih Z of Alexandria said, "Disgusting! Instead of taking responsibility and striving to improve customer service, they instead resort to intimidation," Pix-11 reported.

This is the latest trend among companies. Back in December of 2012, Virginia contractor Christopher Dietz sued a client of his for $750,000 over a negative review, according to the New York Daily News. In December of 2008, Jen Palmer of Salt Lake City wrote a negative review about KlearGear.com after not receiving her merchandise, and was sued for $3,500, ABC News reported.

Hotel's represenatatives have said they will refund charges based on any negative posts, according to Pix-11, and the $500 fine notice has since been removed from the website.
