Vince Vaughn In Talks To Join 'True Detective' Season 2

Add Vince Vaughn to the ever-growing list of actors "in talks" to join the second season of HBO's hit drama, "True Detective." Vaughn is being considered for one of the lead characters, according to TVLine.

The rumors have swirled around the next installment of the Emmy-nominated series. Actors such as Jessica Chastain and Brad Pitt have been reportedly attached, although the most recent contenders, Colin Farrell and Taylor Kitsch, are still in the running. The number of lead roles has bounced between two, three and four with series creator Nic Pizzolatto only saying the action will take place in California.

Vaughn is known for his comedic roles in "Wedding Crashers," "Dodgeball" and "Old School." but he's handled dramatic roles deftly in films "The Locusts," "A Cool, Dry Place" and the remake of "Psycho." He broke out in the 1996 film "Swingers," written by long-time pal and co-star Jon Favreau.

HBO programming chief, Michael Lombardo, told the Television Critics Association on July 10 that "some [casting] announcement will be happening in the next week," and that never came to fruition. He also said the two scripts he'd seen so far were "more exciting than the first season."

The first season starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, who each earned Emmy nominations for their roles (the show earned seven total). The story took place across two different timelines separated by 17 years and followed Louisiana State Police Criminal Investigations Division homicide detectives Rust Cohle (McConaughey) and Marty Hart (Harrelson) in their hunt for a serial killer.

Pizzolatto told The Daily Beast he'll miss actors McConaughey and Harrelson, but the plan was always to tell a different story." The creator has already made an attachment with his season two characters.

"Creating new characters for season two was the same experience as creating Rust and Marty. They didn't exist until I created them, then in their creation, I developed a personal attachment to them," he said.

HBO has not set a date for "True Detective's" season two premiere.
