With brand new episodes of the cult hit "Arrested Development" airing as a Netflix original series, the subscription-based video streaming company seems to be dominating the internet news this week.
CNET reports Netflix will be streaming the latest season of AMC's third season of "The Killing" in Ireland and the U.K.
Previously, Netflix has only aquired full seasons of TV shows all at once, after they've already aired on television. Up-to-date streaming of ongoing shows was a market dominated by Hulu. However, coming off of the success of its original programming and subsequent subscription spike, the company is hoping to experiment with new ideas. The latest of which seems to be small scale testing of streaming shows one episode at a time as they premiere. This season, "The Killing" will air on Sunday nights and be available to Netflix subscribers in Ireland and the U.K. by early Monday morning.
"We're thrilled to be bringing Season 3 of 'The Killing' exclusively to our members in the U.K. and Ireland," Ted Sarandos, Netflix chief content officer, said in a statement. "'The Killing' is an incredibly gripping fan favorite so we wanted to make each new episode available as soon as possible."
Following its first two seasons, AMC initially passed on a third season of the American adaptation of a Danish TV series about a pair of detectives who investigate various homicide cases. However, the show's producer, Fox TV Studios convinced Netflix to stream the show in this manner. The added revenue convinced AMC to renew the show for a third season, making both AMC and Netflix take a risk to experiment a little bit with a third season of the show airing in this format.
Netflix has not yet said that the success or failure of "The Killing" streaming one day after the release will hold any bearing whether or not the service will continue to offer next day airings of shows or if it will expand past the U.K. and Ireland.
