Nicki Minaj is just like the rest of us and gets a little awestruck when around Beyoncé. Minaj called in to Hot97 to talk about the surprise release of the "Flawless" remix and what it was like to get that call from Queen Bey.
The rapper told Hot97 that the "Drunk in Love" singer approached her about a month or two ago for help with a remix to "Flawless," a single from Beyoncé's self-titled album.
"Gee [Roberson, Minaj's manager] called me when I was on my way to Vegas and said 'Beyoncé wants you to remix to Flawless.' After I got proper medical help and started breathing again, I was like 'What?'" Minaj said.
"She sent me a version she wanted. She told me, 'I want you to be you. I don't want you to hold back.' I said, 'You sure?' She said, 'Yeah, I want you to be you and do you,'" she added.
Minaj said the two met up in a New York City studio to work on the track together.
"She was such a sweetheart. She was hyping me up, 'Do your thing. Don't hold back. Go in.' I was like, 'Ok. All right,'" she said.
The remix to the song has been a closely guarded secret for a while now. The "Anaconda" rapper said she wrote the verse for the song before Beyoncé started her "On The Run" tour with Jay Z and they were just "waiting for her to drop it." Apparently, Beyoncé wanted to release the single in the middle of the night like she did with her surprise album.
"She said she was going to drop it in the middle of the [On The Run] tour. We've been going back and forth," Minaj said. "I've been sending photos of myself. We've been going back and forth about the mixes and the single art."
So why release the song now? It was rumored that Minaj pushed back the release of her single, "Anaconda" so Beyoncé could drop "Flawless" but the rapper said she felt like the timing was perfect.
"I figured that eventually we would do something together. I mean, I'm not gonna lie. Recently, I thought it would never happen 'cause I felt like if she was going to ask me, she would have asked," she admitted. "I think the stars aligned the right way. We are just in the right places in our careers that it makes sense now. With the release to her last album, her records are geared to what I do now."
