My Parents Open Carry, a children's picture book, tells the story of a girl's family that open carries handguns and hopes to explain to kids why Americans carry guns for self-defense, The Guardian reported.
Written by Brian Jeffs and Nathan Nephew, co-founders of the pro-gun group Michigan Open Carry, has been released by White Feather Press. The story follows the adventures of Brenna Strong and her parents as they run errands and have fun together, all while carrying handguns out in the open.
The authors said they were inspired to write the book because they couldn't find any pro-gun literature for children. According to the authors, My Parents Open Carry is "written in the hope of providing basic overview of the right to keep and bear arms as well as the growing practice of the open carry of a handgun," because "we fear our children are being raised with a biased view of our constitution and especially in regards to the 2nd Amendment," as reported by The Guardian.
The book teaches children lessons about how open carry can deter crime, it's a faster draw in case of an emergency and that there have been several cases of robbers stalking out a store in the hopes of robbing it only to go somewhere else after they saw someone with a gun in the store. My Parents Open Carry also states the elderly, women and people who are preoccupied are easy targets for crime, ThinkProgress reported.
The book shows at least one picture of men and women openly displaying guns in local bookstores and other businesses.
On the authors' website, they add that for a limited time, White Feather Press is giving away a free copy of the book Raising Boys Feminists Will Hate! by Doug Giles with every purchase of My Parents Open Carry.
ThinkProgress reported that nearly half of all homicides, committed by men or women, were preceded by some sort of argument or fight. When a fight arises between two people, the presence of a gun can allow the situation to escalate into a homicide.
