A 3-year-old boy was accidentally shot by his father, an off-duty MTA officer, in their Long Island home Tuesday night, WABC reports.
Suffolk County police responded to a shooting at a home in Smithtown just before 7 p.m. and discovered a 3-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to his upper body, according to PIX-11.
The father, a Metropolitan Transportation Authority police officer, accidentally fired his gun, injuring himself and his son, WABC reports.
MTA spokesperson Salvatore Arena said, "We are aware of the shooting incident involving the off-duty MTA Police Officer, which is being investigated by the Suffolk County Police Department. The MTA Internal Affairs Bureau will investigate once the Suffolk PD completes its investigation," WABC reported.
Sources told WABC the child was conscious and crying when taken to the hospital.
The boy is in Stony Brook University Hospital, where he underwent surgery shortly after the event. His injuries are believed to be non-life threatening.
PIX 11 states it is not known whether any charges will be filed.
