Foursquare released an updated version of its app Wednesday designed to deliver a more personalized service.
The app is available for Android and iOS devices and comes with new colors, a new layout, and new features, according to Mashable. A stylized "F" resembling a flag has replaced the old white checkmark as the app's logo, and includes "waves" that flow from it.
With the update, the app creates a profile of the user by asking about their interests, such as what food, drinks, and places they like to go to relax.
After learning what the user likes, the smart app shows places that fit their criteria, such as restaurants, shops, coffee places, nightlife spots, and other locations, PC Magazine reported.
"Our phone should learn about us- our tastes, our social connections, and our preferences. And, using what they know, they should help us better explore the world around us," Foursquare said.
When looking for places to hang out, users can be specific, entering terms like "whiskey" or "salted caramel", or make more general requests like "outdoor seating" or "used bookstores."
Check-in history, restaurant ratings and data from Foursquare friends are used to come up with recommendations, Mashable reported. The new horizontal nav bar on the app includes Breakfast, Nightlife, Fun, Sights, and other options that users can tap on to see cards with photos that recommend cool spots close by.
Foursquare started out five years ago as a check-in service, and has since generated 6 billion check-ins, 55 million tips, and 65 million locations, PC Magazine reported. While the new Foursquare app has been redesigned as a tool for finding new places, the company's new Swarm app is taking over its old duties of checking in on friends and keeping up with them. However, both apps can work together and separately on both Android and iOS devices.
Fans of Foursquare can download the updated app now for free at the Google Play Store and the iTunes App Store.
