A 2-year-old boy watched as a family dog mauled his grandmother to death while she was babysitting, WCPO Cincinnati reported.
Cindy Whisman, 59, of Madison Township, Ohio, was killed on August 4 when the dog snapped and forced her to the ground, The Daily News reported. Family members referred to the dog as a pit bull, but DNA samples taken from the dog have not yet confirmed it, according to FOX 19. As of Wednesday, the Butler County Sheriff has filed no charges for the incident.
Wayne Walker, a neighbor, heard Whisman cry for help and ran to save her, beating the dog off her in the process and calling 911. Whisman suffered injuries to her face, neck and body and was dead by the time police arrived.
Walker told FOX 19 in Cincinnati that when he hit the dog, he went straight to the door, and that his intention was to kill it.
The dog, named Polo, belonged to Whisman's daughter, the mother of the young child, who said the animal had never showed aggression before. She told FOX 19 that he has never attacked anyone and didn't think the behavior sounds like something he would have done.
The Dog Warden in Butler County put the dog in custody of the Animal Friends Human Society in Hamilton. The family have the option to get the dog back following a court hearing. Julie Whisman originally told FOX 19 she could never own the dog that killed her mother, but on Wednesday, Dayton Daily News reported that she was still unsure of her decision.
After an investigation by the local sheriff, authorities said the dog will be euthanized if they don't take him back. Julie Whisman told Dayton Daily News that she wants to wait until the results of the investigation. Her and her son recently moved in with Cindy Whisman, but had owned the dog for four years.
