Police arrested and charged a Florida woman in the slaying of her 5-year-old son who went missing at a carnival in New Jersey in 1991.
Local and Middlesex County, N.J., officials took 47-year-old Michelle Lodzinski into custody and she was being held on a $2 million bail. She was charged with the murder of her son, Timothy (Timmy) Wiltsey. Lodzinski reported him missing May 25, 1991, reports Fox News.
In April 1992, officials found his skeletal remains at Raritan Center, an industrial site at Edison, N.J.
Lodzinski was always on the suspect list of the police who took 23 years to make the arrest. Following the investigation, she confessed of lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about being abducted to Michigan in 1994. She also pled guilty to theft in 1997.
According to the officials, a grand jury that charged Lodzinski said she "did purposely or knowingly kill Timothy Wiltsey, or did purposely or knowingly inflict serious bodily injury upon Timothy Wiltsey, resulting in his death," reports Local10.com.
Following this, the authorities issued the warrant against Lodzinski, a resident of Port St. Lucie and an employee in Martin County.
It remains unclear what led to her arrest. But according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey, a cold-case review helped launch a new investigation into Wiltsey's death. "Following a routine, cold-case review of the evidence and facts surrounding the disappearance and murder of Timothy Wiltsey, a new investigation was conducted and the matter was presented to the grand jury," Carey said, reports CSNPhilly.com.
According to the Sheriff's Office, Lodzinski is being held at the Martin County Jail and is likely to be extradited back to New Jersey.
