Everyone is accustomed to brides and new moms creating registries during their big milestone times in their lives, but students preparing to go away to college are beginning to get in on the event.
This year at The Container Store, college-bound student registries were the most popular, accounting for 57 percent of all registries created at the company.
Despite the growing popularity, critics feel that going away to college doesn't constitute the privilege of asking people for dorm room presents.
"A high school graduation party doesn't necessitate a gift. At most, I'd say it necessitates a card," Lizzie Post, co-author of the 18th edition of Emily Post's Etiquette, told ABC News.
However, supporters of this new trend see the use of the registry being a helpful tool during this milestone point in a young adult's life.
"Signing up for a college registry or putting together a less formal wish list is definitely catching on," Jeff Gawronski, founder of the online store said in a public statement. "It's being economically smart. You don't want another teddy bear waving a Class of 2014 flag."
Patricia Blanton, who is attending San Francisco State University in the fall, told CNN that she created a college registry when she stumbled upon Target's college registry online, since her family and friends were already asking her what she needed for her new dorm.
