Brian Hoyer was dubbed as Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback for their preseason opener.
The announcement was made by Browns coach Mike Pettine after Wednesday's practice. Hoyer will start in the game on Saturday, in which the Browns will take on the Detroit Lions, according to NFL.com.
Pettine added that there is a possibility that Johnny Manziel will play more with the first team. When asked about wanting a starting quarterback in place by the Browns' third preseason game, he replied, "That's the plan."
Manziel, who has had strong practices recently, said each practice has helped him get better, ESPN reported.
"I just need to keep learning the playbook, and hopefully in due time, I'll be able to be comfortable with a lot broader region of the playbook instead of the little area that I am now," Manziel said. "It's steadily growing each day. That's what I need to continue to do to get better, expand my knowledge of the playbook and expand my knowledge of this game."
Another player announced to be participating in the game is receiver Josh Gordon, who Pettine said will see time with both the starters and the backups, ESPN reported. Gordon is currently waiting to hear about his possible suspension from the league.
Hoyer said he always expected that he would start as the team's quarterback, and that his approach will remain the same.
"I think if you go about it that you're trying to be the best quarterback for this team regardless of where you are, things will work themselves out," Hoyer said.
Pettine was also asked if Hoyer and Manziel's progress in the first two preseason games will affect who ends up getting the starting position, NFL.com reported.
"More than likely," Pettine said. "I think more weight will be on those as I've said before because it's live reps. The practice part will still be important, but it's safe to say that."
