The Flash has an important announcement he needs to make before he bursts down the street to save an innocent pedestrian from getting hit.
"My name is Barry Allen and I am the fastest man alive," Grant Gustin's character says in a new trailer for The CW series 'Flash.' Those words (with the exception of Barry Allen for Wally West) appeared in almost every issue of the Flash comic books written by Mark Waid during the 1990s.
A voiceover briefly explains how Barry received his superhuman speed when lightning struck the socially awkward forensic scientist, and changed his life forever. Barry zips through traffic and back allies so he can save distracted pedestrians from passing cars, along with his surrogate father from flying debris whipped up by a tornado.
In another piece of voiceover a man tells Barry, "Inside your body could be the map to a whole new world," which The Hollywood Reporter suggests could be a reference to the DC Multiverse. It's a group of parallel worlds that first appeared in 1961's The Flash No. 123, "Flash of Two Worlds."
Back in this world, the Flash will confront a growing number of villains that now includes Tony Woodward a.k.a. Girder. The recurring character will appear in episode six, according to TV Line.
In the comics, Tony was thrown into a vat of molten steel that included scraps from S.T.A.R. labs experiments during a riot at his steel plant. Those scraps made Tony into a mass of iron who had superhuman strength, and was impenetrable to everything but rust.
Girder will be part of the Rogues Gallery on the show, which includes the Weather Wizard and Captain Cold, played by Wentworth Miller. According to the role's description, Tony bullied Barry growing up. He's now a "grinning lunkhead who loves destruction... who can transmute any part of his body into solid steel."
