Ebola Virus Outbreak 2014: Airlines Cancel Flights to Sierra Leone, Liberia

British Airways is the latest major airline to stop all flights to Sierra Leone and Liberia, two of the worst hit countries with Ebola, due to the "deteriorating public health situation," CNN reported.

A British Airways spokesman said, "The safety of our customers, crew and ground teams is always our top priority and we will keep the route under constant review in the coming weeks," according to the Daily Mail. The airline will be suspending flights until August 31, and will offer customers with tickets "a range of options including a full refund and the ability to rebook their flights to a later date."

Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia are at the center of the largest Ebola outbreak in history, which has claimed the lives of at least 950 victims.

Nigeria, which is nearby, has also recorded seven Ebola cases.

Emirates became the first major international airline this month to suspend service to Guinea and said, "the safety of our passengers and crew is the highest priority and will not be compromised," CNN reported.

And while other airlines may have not suspended flights altogether, they do appear to be reducing their services to certain regions.

"There have been noticeably fewer international flights to these countries, leading to lower revenues and financial inflows," the World Bank said.

Pan-African airline ASKY and Arik Air, a smaller regional carrier, have also restricted their flights.

Ebola has hit some of West Africa's most vulnerable economies and poorest rural areas, CNN reported.

In Guinea, where more than 300 people have died from the virus, the economic growth is expected to decrease from 4.5% to 3.5%, according to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) issued industry guidance on how to detect and deal with potentially infected passengers.

The World Bank pledged $200 million this week to try to contain the Ebola outbreak, according to CNN. The World Health Organization and West African nations affected by the outbreak have also pledged $100 million.
