New York kicked off the preseason with a 17-13 win over the Buffalo Bills in the annual Hall of Fame game. Giants rookie running back Andre Williams made a solid debut, rushing seven times for 48 yards and one touchdown. The fourth-round pick out of Boston College admitted the game bolstered his confidence.
"It gives me confidence. I feel like I'm supposed to be here," Williams said, via ESPN. "I'm part of the team now."
Williams is expected to get more playing time with the retirement of David Wilson, likely claiming the No. 2 tailback spot behind Rashad Jennings.
"I thought he played well, and that was encouraging," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said of Williams. "David Wilson's injury notwithstanding, it's very important to us, no matter what, because you need a natural rotation."
Giants quarterback Eli Manning played only three series, completing 6-of-7 passes for 43 yards but losing one fumble.
Saturday is Pittsburgh's preseason opener. While Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said he would play the starters, he likely won't play them for more than one quarter.
"I play the starters in this game, but I don't want to play them enough where fatigue becomes a factor in their play," Tomlin told the team website. "And then, I'm going to play the next wave of guys until fatigue starts to erode their play, where it becomes counter-productive. Then I finish it with the rest of them."
