A Philadelphia man was charged with murder after confessing that he strangled his wife while she was out for an evening jog, police said on Sunday, according to The Associated Press.
Authorities announced the arrest of 48-year-old Christopher Murray at a Sunday afternoon news conference after failed a lie detector test and then admitted to killing his wife, Police Lieutenant Philip, the AP reported.
His 46-year-old wife, Constance, was found dead Tuesday in Pennypack Park in northeast Philadelphia, according to the AP. The mother of two had been out running the night before.
Riehl said aspects of his story didn't add up and Connie's headphones and cellphone were recovered in a nearby sewer, according to the AP.
"The reality was he became a suspect early on and remained a suspect until he confessed," Riehl said, the AP reported.
Murray told investigators that he and his wife had argued on the evening of Aug. 4 and she left for a walk or jog in a park near their home, according to the AP.
Murray followed his wife in his car and the pair argued on a park bench, where Murray strangled her, police said, the AP reported. He called police early Wednesday to report her missing, and a woman walking her dog found Connie Murray's body a few hours later.
"She went up there voluntarily to talk to him about whatever was going on and things went bad," Riehl said, according to the AP.Her body was found early the next morning, police said.
Riehl said Murray has expressed remorse, saying he thinks "it was more of a rage incident more than premeditated," the AP reported.
Police said they did not believe Murray set out in his car with the intention of killing his wife, according to the AP. Surveillance video from the area showed his vehicle in the area.
The Murrays have two daughters, according to the Philadelphia Daily News, the AP reported. It was unclear if Murray had obtained an attorney.
