Snapped: NJ Wife Goes Medieval on Husband Who Requests Divorce

Talk about a scorned woman!

Mauvette Mattadeen, 43, received a six-year prison sentence Friday after a Somerset County jury convicted her in June of aggravated assault against her former husband.

According to authorities, the New Jersey resident sprayed a chemical in her husband's eyes while he slept, then poured hot oil on him and ultimately wound up chasing him with an ax around their home – all because he asked her for a divorce, NBC News reported.

Mattadeen was cleared of attempted murder charges from the April 2012 attack but she will be deported to her native country, Jamaica, once she completes her prison term.

The Franklin Township resident could have received a longer prison term if the judge didn't give her a lesser sentence due to her history of suffering from domestic violence by men "who were authority figures in her life," The Courier News reported.

Mattadeen's lawyer argued she acted in self-defense, but the judge did not excuse her actions, though he acknowledged that the years of abuse had "created a strong resentment and provocation which came to a tragic result," according to NBC News.

After the attack, Mattadeen's husband had burns on over 23 percent of his body and he lost sight in one eye. He also lost hearing in one ear, suffered permanent scarring and has undergone multiple surgeries, according to NBC News.

The couple is no longer together.

Mattadeen will receive credit for the 847 days she has been in jail since her arrest.
