Laundry Detergent Pods Proving An Increasing Household Risk to Young Children

The colorful laundry detergent pods wrapped in in clear plastic once again proved confusing to a small child.

Zoe Mishler, of Minnesota, popped a blue detergent pod in her mouth this week, thinking it was a blueberry like the ones she was eating earlier.

The 13-month-old was in shock when she got chemical burns in her throat instead of a burst of a sweet, berry flavor.

"All I wanted to do is take the pain away from her," Zoe's mom, Ellen Mishler, told Fox. "You can't explain this is going to make you better. If you just sit still and let them do the medicine, that it will make you better. But she doesn't understand that."

A spokesperson for Sam's Club, who manufactured the detergent pod consumed by Zoe, said the corporation has transitioned away from transparent tubs to address the problem and are working on a design for a more kid-safe lid.

Zoe was in the ICU for several days, according to Fox, but she is now on the road to recovery.

This lincident is only one of 100 pod ingestions in Minnesota alone this year, reports Daily Mail. The first half of this year alone saw over 5,000 mistaken consumption reports in the U.S., according to the American Association of Poison Control Centers.
