A shark attack at Cocoa Beach this past weekend marks the fifth attack to take place in Brevard County, Flor. in the last few weeks.
The latest victim, 10-year-old Krama Fordham from Georgia, was knee-deep in the water when a shark bit her right leg on Saturday at the beach near Lori Wilson Park, according to WFTV Orlando. The beach was closed after the attack, but it is now open again.
Fordham was on vacation with her mom when she suffered the bite. She was taken to a Cape Canaveral hospital to be treated for her injuries.
It took a good amount of work for lifeguards to stop the bleeding from the wound, which was described by witness as a "good sized cut." Jimmy Acevdeo, a swimmer who was nearby when the shark struck, also gave his account of the incident, The Inquisitr reported.
"I look over and I see four puncture wounds and everybody was saying, 'Shark,'" Acevdeo said. "I was right next to her."
The International Shark Attack File says the amount of shark attacks in Florida totaled 23 last year, and three of them took place in Brevard County. Jeffrey Scabarozi, chief of Brevard County Ocean Rescue, is looking for a better way to track these bites in order to combat the increasing number of attacks from these predators.
"It's a goal, that's probably the best way to say it," Scabarozi said. "In the past year and half, we have seen an increase in the number of shark attacks."
Luckily, the injuries Fordham suffered were not life-threatening, WFTV Orlando reported. She has since been released from the hospital and has returned home.
