Rafael Nadal to Decide on Participation in U.S. Open This Weekend

Rafael Nadal has until Saturday to decide whether or not he will take part in the 2014 U.S. Open.

The Spaniard's participation in the last tennis Grand Slam tournament of the year was first brought into question after he suffered an injury to his right wrist on July 30th, according to the International Business Times. The injury put him out of action for two to three weeks, resulting in his missing ATP tournaments in Toronto, Canada and Cincinnati, Ohio.

Despite the setback, Nadal was spotted practicing with a splint on his wrist only five days after his injury was revealed. He was also reported to be preparing for his return to this month's U.S. Open.

"Following a scan and clinical evaluation, his progress is on track, although he will still have tests from time to time," the Spanish tennis federation said in a statement at the time.

If Nadal is able to return, he would defend his title against Serb Novak Djokovic, whom Nadal beat to the win the U.S. Open last year, TVNZ reported.

"My dream is being there and I will work for it," Nadal said.

He added that that he is scheduled to meet with his doctors in Barcelona for final examinations, which will show if he has healed from the fracture in his wrist.

The deadline for Nadal's decision was announced at an inauguration of a tennis and paddle club in his hometown of Manacor, on the island of Majorca, TVNZ reported.

"If it has healed I'll have to try and see how I feel when I train and on Friday or at latest Saturday a decision will be made," he said.

Nadal's accolades include winning the U.S. Open twice, once in 2010 and again in 2013, as well as multiple victories at the French Open, the International Business Times reported.

In addition to winning the 15th Grand Slam title, Nadal plans to use the match against Djokovic as a chance to beat rival Roger Federer in the ATP rankings.
