A Polish couple died after trying to take a 'selfie' on the edge of a cliff in Portugal, according to Polish Radio.
The couple fell hundreds of feet from a rocky cliff in Cabo da Raca, Portugual on Saturday, as their 5 and 6-year-old children watched. Both children are now under psychiatric care.
In order to reach the cliff's edge, they would have had to cross a safety barrier, Polish Radio stated. The details of the accident are still a bit hazy.
'Selfies,' a word used to describe a self-portrait photograph typically taken with a cell phone, are the latest trend. It was revealed that the parents gave their children the camera to take the picture, the Portugal Resident reported.
A Spanish couple at the location called emergency crews, but helicopter rescuers had to postpone the recovery of the bodies because rising tides, Polish Radio reported. The bodies, lying at the bottom of a ravine, were recovered on Sunday.
The cliff's edge is Portugal's most westerly point and is a popular spot for tourists to photograph themselves "at the edge of Europe," USA Today reported.
A fireman at the scene told Maritime Police to remove the small paths that run alongside of the cliff, The Portugal Resident reported.
"The paths encourage people," Jose Dias of the Almocageme fire station told The Portugal Resident. "Tourists think they must lead somewhere. They climb the fences - not thinking that they have been erected to protect people's lives - and then terrible things like this happen."
The spot is also a magnet for people who want to commit suicide, security guard Jose Goncalves said. "We've had all kinds here. There was one woman who came with all her cats. They all went over edge. It was terrible," he said.
The family had been living in Portugal for several years and are believed to be residents of Lisbon. The children's closest relatives have been notified and are due to arrive in Portugal.
