The self-proclaimed "Happiest Place on Earth" had trouble holding up to that title Tuesday evening around 5:30 p.m. when a small explosion shocked visitors in the parks popular "Toontown" destination.
The explosion appears to be the result of a dry ice bomb that was left in a trash can. The substance was placed in a bottle with the lid on and eventually exploded. No injuries were reported as people simply heard a loud bang that they claim sounded like a gun shot only louder. The blast was confined to the trash can.
Disneyland security officials immediately evacuated the park as a precaution to allow local police and the bomb squad to investigate the park's safety. Visitors were allowed back in the park after about two hours.
Visitors of the park took special notice of the fact that the happy Disney music that perpetually plays in the background at the park never stopped during the evacuation process that took place.
"You wouldn't expect situations like that coming to a place like this. That is crazy, that's wild," West Covina resident Jonathan Rosario said to the LA Times. Rosario, who was at the park with a toddler as music to the "It's a Small World" echoed in the background continued, "It reminds us we all need to do our part to be safe."
The dry ice explosive device appeared similar to other explosive devices that have exploded in Anaheim neighborhoods in the past few months, according to local police.
"Unfortunately, it's an all too-common experience," said Sgt. Bob Dunn of the Anaheim Police Department to the LA Times.
Dunn reports that police were investigating whether there was any connection between those explosions and the blast in Toontown.
Disney land released a brief statement about what happened which said that "a small bang was heard in a trash can... In an abundance of caution, we evacuated Toontown to allow local authorities the opportunity to investigate." They've yet to make any other comments on the matter.
