Haitian police are searching intensely for 329 prisoners who escaped from an overcrowded prison on the outskirts of the Haitian capital, The Associated Press reported.
Witnesses said two SUVs carrying about 15 gunmen showed up at the prison in Croix-des-Bouquets before noon on Sunday and shot at guards, injuring two.
The attack seems to be aimed at freeing a prominent businessman's son who is being held on kidnapping charges. Haitian officials said the attack coincided with recreation time, as prisoners began to riot when the shooting started.
Authorities increased security along the border and asked for help from officials in the Dominican Republic and Jamaica, fearing some of the men who escaped had already fled the country.
The Dominican Republic government ordered extra troops to its border with Haiti and are searching for the escaped prisoners, Defense Minister Sigrido Pared said.
Authorities are also investigating whether members of the Haitian police who guard the prison cooperated in the attack, Justice Minister Jean Renel Sanon said.
The attack's apparent beneficiary, Clifford Brandt, is a member of a wealthy family and has been awaiting trial since 2012 for allegedly running a kidnapping ring in the capital.
The government is offering a reward equivalent to $25,000 for information leading to Brandt's capture, according to AP.
The prison held 899 prisoners before the attack - about 130 over capacity.
10 of the 329 escaped prisoners have been recaptured, said Police Chief Godson Orleus.
