BioWare has revealed their latest twist on fantasy role-playing games with “Shadow Realms” during Gamescom 2014.
The title will allow gamers to create their own "dungeons" in a magical world where evil lurks in the shadows. Game Informer reports the new franchise will include wizards, monsters, shadow lords, player-vs-player gameplay, side missions and more. “Shadow Realms” aims to bring the nostalgia of tabletop RPGs to the PC.
“It is a game that finally fulfills that fantasy of a never-ending RPG where the players meet up regularly to keep their epic adventures going for as long as they want,” James Ohlen, lead designer at BioWare, wrote in a blog post.
“All the enemies, traps and challenges are squarely in the hands of another player, who controls them just like a Dungeon Master,” he continued. “The monsters and villains are smart and unpredictable, making every battle a test of strategy and power. Best of all, everyone gets to enjoy a story that plays out like their favorite TV series, but where they decide the fates of its world and characters.”
“Shadow Realms” will also include episodic content for players to connect with NPCs, according to Game Informer. The title will allow gamers to build relationships and create memorable storylines throughout their journey.
“Weeks will form seasons, which are planned to be one-year blocks of content that will include a hefty-dose of story into the action-packed skeleton-smashing and treasure looting,” Game Informer reports.
“While there will be many different missions to explore on launch, as players catch up with the episodic content a good deal of time will likely be spent repeating various missions - though they will be different each time due to varying classes, minions, and shadow lords.”
BioWare has yet to announce a release date for “Shadow Realms,” which will be exclusive to the PC.
