The bloody body of a 62-year-old American woman was found inside a suitcase at a luxury hotel in Bali, and the woman's young daughter--and the daughter's boyfriend--have been arrested, Jezebel reported on Wednesday.
Heather Mack, 18, and boyfriend Tommy Schaefer, 21, are now in police custody as authorities try to pinpoint the events that led up to Sheila von Weise Mack's death.
Mack and Schaefer claim that while they were staying at the St. Regis Bali resort, the three parties were taken captive by an armed gang. Mack and Schaefer said they were able to escape, but the gang killed the mother. However, hotel workers and the taxi driver who found the body gave police a very different version of the story.
The taxi driver told authorities that Mack and Schaefer hailed him at the hotel, placing one bag in the trunk. From there, the couple went back into the hotel and did not return, according to CNN.
Two hours went by before the driver entered the hotel and spoke to employees, who went to the couple's room and found it empty. When the taxis' trunk was opened, they saw blood on the suitcase and drove the car to the police station, where the body was then revealed. Two smaller suitcases containing bloodied towels were also found in the St. Regis' garden.
Mack and Schaefer were sleeping in a hotel room about six miles from St. Regis when they were apprehended by police.
There is said to be closed-circuit television footage from Monday of Schaefer and Sheila arguing in the lobby of the hotel. The body was apparently wrapped in a hotel bedsheet and the couple refused to let the bellhop carry the luggage down to the lobby.
The two have not yet been named suspects and can be held in police for 24 hours before they are named. Once they are named suspects, they can be detained for up to 20 days, according to Indonesian Law, CNN reported.
