ABC Family Renewal and Cancellation: 'Switched at Birth' and 'Twisted'

ABC Family has renewed the drama series "Switched at Birth" for a fourth season.

The Disney-owned cable network announced the renewal of one of its top scripted dramas on Wednesday ahead of the season three finale, which is scheduled to air on Aug 18, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"Fans will be clamoring for season four and to know what happens with Daphne and Bay after the season three finale next week," Tom Ascheim, ABC Family president, said in a statement about the Peabody Award-winning series.

The show follows the lives of two teenage girls who discover that they were switched at birth and must learn to co-exist with each other's families and friends despite their socioeconomic and ethnic differences. The cast includes Vanessa Marano, Katie LeClerc, Lea Thompson, Constance Marie, Sean Berdy, D.W. Moffett, Marlee Matlin and Lucas Grabeel.

The family drama is reportedly remains one of basic cable's top summer dramas among female viewers in its time period. It drew 1.06 million viewers for its most recent new episode.

Sadly, the network will not be moving forward with a second season of mystery drama "Twisted." A spokesperson confirmed that ABC Family would "not moving forward with additional episodes" and that April 1 was the finale episode.

"Twisted" focused on 16-year-old Danny Desai, played by Avan Jogia, who was determined to clear his name after being charged with killing his aunt when he was younger. The season finale drew just 770,000 viewers in April.
