Samsung's 'Project Moonlight' VR Headset to Debut in September

Rumors about Samsung's virtual reality headset claim that the product will be unveiled in three weeks.

The South Korean company is expected to show off the headset, codenamed "Project Moonlight," at its upcoming product event in early September, according to The Verge. A new photo of the device shows it to appear similar to Google's Cardboard, which includes lenses that allow smartphones to show virtual images. It also shows what appear to be a focus dial and a lid, possibly for holding the phone in place when it's connected to the device.

The event is expected to announce Samsung's Galaxy Note 4, a product that has also been a subject of rumors. It will be held in both New York and at the IFA trade show in Berlin.

The headset may be able to track positions with the processing power from a smartphone, Mashable reported.

The report hints that the team behind the Oculus Rift VR headset will help in the development of Samsung's device. While reports from earlier this year claimed that the two headsets would compete with each other, the most recent report claims that they will instead work together.

Whether or not Oculus helped make Project Moonlight's goggles has yet to be revealed. It is also not known if the final version will look different in its unveiling, The Verge reported.

Samsung is rumored to be trading high-resolution screens for Oculus's VR hardware software, with iFixit revealing recently that Samsung's screens are included in Oculus Rift, Mashable reported.

Those looking forward to Project Moonlight's debut may have to wait until Samsung's Unpacked event on Sept. 3rd.
