HBO's "The Leftovers," starring actor Justin Theroux, is coming back for another season.
The cable network announced Wednesday that it has renewed the drama series for a second season, according to Variety. The news reportedly comes three weeks before the season finale is set to air.
"We are thrilled to bring back "The Leftovers" for a second season with the exceptional talents of Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta," Michael Lombardo, president of HBO Programming, said in a statemenet. "It has been truly exciting to see the overwhelming response to their provocative and original storytelling. We look forward to continuing the journey as the show delves deeper into the lives of those who remain."
"The Leftovers" average rating of 7.4 million viewers "once all platforms are taken into account," according to The Hollywood Reporter. It debuted on June 29 with 1.8 million viewers on its 10 p.m. on Sunday slot.
The drama is a show about the people who remain on Earth during The Rupture.
"You have this sort of Earth-shattering event that's on a global scale, that collective shock or trauma can make people incredibly weird," Theroux explained about the show. "You see it in small pockets, when a town has a mass shooting, where they are forever changed in this way. It's both incredibly sad and interesting, for no other reason than they share something, you know?"
The show also stars Amy Brenneman, Christopher Eccleston, Liv Tyler, Chris Zylka, Margaret Qualley, Carrie Coon, Emily Meade, Amanda Warren, Ann Dowd, Michael Gaston, Max and Charlie Carver and Annie Q.
"The Leftovers" airs Sundays at 10 p.m. on HBO and the show's season finale airs Sept. 7.
