Free agent Shawn Marion reportedly agreed in principle to sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers. ESPN reports Marion, whom Cleveland wanted for his defensive prowess, was willing to take a minimum deal for the chance to play with superstar LeBron James.
The 36-year-old veteran plans to sign sometime this month with his fifth team, according to ESPN's Marc Stein.
"(Marion) has committed to sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers, according to league sources," Stein wrote Sunday. "Sources told ESPN.com that Marion informed the Cavaliers this weekend that he intends to sign with them this month, despite the fact that Cleveland can only offer him a minimum deal.
"The chance to play with LeBron James and immediately compete for a championship, sources said, clinched Marion's decision to choose Cleveland in the face of a ramped-up pursuit by the Indiana Pacers."
USA Today Sports confirmed Sunday night Marion would sign with Cleveland on a one-year contract worth $1.4 million.
Marion, who's played the last five seasons in Dallas, finished the 2013-14 season with 10.4 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.
Cleveland also reportedly is still eying free agent Ray Allen, who still hasn't decided whether he will return for his 19th season. CBS Sports reported Saturday the Cavaliers were "optimistic" about signing Allen before the start of training camp, where he would rejoin former teammates James, Mike Miller and James Jones.
