Microsoft's Windows Phone smartphone platform is slowly gaining developers' trust and winning new apps every day. The latest to join the third largest mobile OS is Foursquare's Swarm app used for check-ins and searches for friends at local locations. Swarm has been one of the most demanded features from the time it was split from Foursquare back in May. However, the check-in app is not entirely different from its Android and iOS counterparts.
Swarm for Windows Phone features a slightly different interface, with the navigation bar appearing at the top. The iOS version of the app features the navigation bar at the bottom. The app includes features like neighborhood sharing that allows users to see what others are doing. Standard features like finding friends and check-in are intact.
The release of Swarm for WP users was anticipated as the company was putting in some final touches in July. The company had promised the release in the next few weeks, which evidentially lasted for a little more than three weeks.
"We're so excited to announce Swarm is now available to download on Windows Phone. It's the best way to keep up and meet up with your friends, so pin it to your start screen today," the company announced at The Foursquare Blog.
Foursquare has been looking to improve its services since May. Its main app used for local recommendations got a new look and a redesigned logo last month. Foursquare said it was the beginning of the "personalized local search" future, which was at the company's core since it was started more than five years ago.
Foursquare has a user base of 50 million users and competes with services like Yelp, which offers similar services.
In its official announcement last week, the company also said a revamped Foursquare app for Windows Phone is coming this fall. For now, the Swarm app is available for download from Windows Phone Store for free.
