The pregnant teen charged with stuffing her mother's body in a suitcase after murdering her claims the police are racist for serving her fried chicken in prison and are treating her poorly.
Heather Mack, 19, and her boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, 21, were charged with killing Mack's mother, Sheila von Wiese Mack, while on vacation at a Bali hotel room. The Chicago couple complained about the Indonesian jail giving them a KFC meal, which they say is for the lower class in society.
Schaefer told police he speculates he was served fried chicken because of his black skin, which insults him, according to news.com.au reports. If found guilty, the couple could face death.
"We give the same food for all suspects. We also give special attention to her as she is still young. This is a transition period for her," Denpasar Police Chief Djoko Hari Utomo tells news.com.au.
However, Mack's attorney, Michael Elkin, tells NBC the fried chicken isn't the only way the pregnant teen is getting mistreated:
"Heather seemed to be dazed and confounded," Elkin said. "I asked why she sounded incoherent at times. She said that she was not getting enough water. She also mentioned that she was being given 'vitamin pills,' but could not identify what they were for and asked me if she should stop taking them."
The investigation is continuing, and the victim's body will be sent back to the U.S. on Wednesday.
