Premier League Standings: Manchester City On Top After Week 1; Manchester United Falls in Upset

The Barclays Premier League began the 2014-2015 season this past Saturday and welcomed newcomer teams Leicester City, Burnley and Queens Park Rangers after their promotion this summer.

Saturday featured a number of interesting finishes, including Manchester United's 2-1 loss to Swansea City. Wayne Rooney tied up the match in the 53rd minute with a bicycle kick from about three yards away, but Swansea City's Gylfi Sigurdsson scored from 15 yards out in the 72nd minute to seal the victory. It was Manchester United's first opening day loss at home in 42 years.

Aside from Swansea City, exciting wins for Arsenal and Tottenham closed out Saturday's festivities. Arsenal broke the 1-1 draw in the 91st minute with a goal by midfielder Aaron Ramsey after a three-hit volley in Crystal Palace's penalty area. Arsenal's crosstown rivals, Tottenham, also captured a late-game victory on the first day of the season. The Spurs defeated West Ham 1-0 with a goal from Eric Dier in the 93rd minute of the match.

Also on Saturday, Leicester City managed a 2-2 draw against Everton; Aston Villa defeated Stoke City 1-0; Sunderland drew with West Bromwich Albion 2-2; and Hull City defeated Queens Park Rangers 1-0.

Manchester City and Liverpool picked up right from where they left off from 2013-2014 season. Man City is back atop the Premier League, where they finished in first place last year, after defeating Newcastle United 2-0 with goals from David Silva (38') and Sergio Aguero (92'). Liverpool, last year's second place finishers, took down Southampton 2-1 with a tie-breaking goal in the 79th minute from striker Daniel Sturridge.

THIS JUST IN: Chelsea is now atop the 2014-2015 Premier League standings after defeating Burnley 3-1 on Monday. Trailing 1-0 after the 14th minute, Chelsea turned it on with goals from Diego Costa (17'), André Schürrle (21') and Branislav Ivanovic (34').
