Early this month, Microsoft released a Windows 8.1 update that was supposed to enhance security and features performance. Instead it caused "blue screen of death" (BSOD) and other significant errors to users who installed the patch.
Engineers are already investigating these problems and recommend that users uninstall the update. The update was downloaded on Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2003.
Users who have installed the update reported BSOD, system instability and changes in fonts. According to Digital Trends, users who attempted to modify, replace or delete the unwanted fonts received a "File in use" pop-up error message.
PCAdvisor detailed a process of uninstalling the update with a warning to backup files, as it may delete files stored in the registry. Users will need to log in with safe mode as an administrator, access their registry editor, locate the updated fonts to delete them and then uninstall the updates from the control panel.
In addition to this problem, Microsoft is dealing with an extreme slowdown with Internet Explorer versons 7 through 11. The company has released a patch to address this problem that users can download via this page.
Microsoft has identified four issues related to the Windows 8.1 update, numbering the errors 2982791, 2970228, 2975719 and 297533.
