Xbox One Releases ReddX as its Own Reddit App

Microsoft announced Monday that Xbox One users in the U.S. and Canada now have access to a new Reddit app for the console.

The app, called ReddX, lets users browse the social network, submit their own links, and upvote and downvote content from the Xbox One, according to The Verge.

Xbox's Larry Hryb said the new app is the first to be built exclusively for Microsoft's console, unlike Reeddit and other apps that work to make it easier for people to use a controller to browse Reddit.

Games can Snapp ReddX to the side of the screen, as well as view and zoom in on text, images, videos, GIFs and other Reddit content, IGN reported. They will also be able to use their Xbox One Controller, media remote or Xbox SmartGlass app for commenting on threads and other activities. Other featured abilities include saving photos of their profile and saving images as the ReddX app background.

Meme-named media achievements are also available for gamers to unlock with the app. The first console-created Reddit thread was posted by Hryb before the ReddX's launch.

The app shows topics on the site's front page on the left and YouTube videos, images and GIFs will load automatically on the right, The Verge reported. Gamers can zoom in on pictures, skip through videos, and fast-forward, rewind and pause animated GIFs.

Owners of Xbox One consoles with Kinects won't have to use controllers, apps or other devices to control ReddX, and can instead use the camera to control the app with their voice.

In addition to the release of ReddX, Microsoft announced that it will release an update to the Twitch app on Xbox One with a new "watch with friends" feature that lets users see and watch Twitch channels that their friends are watching, IGN reported. There is also an optional feature where the Kinect can be used to follow and zoom on a user's face while broadcasting, and users can also capture broadcasting and audio from their headsets.

ReddX is being released at the same time as the launch of another app called MTV, which provides those with a TV subscription with sneaks, bonus clips, culture news, behind-the-scene segments and full episodes from select MTV series.
