Samsung Electronics announced Tuesday that it has purchased HVAC distributor Quietside, showing its interest in "smart home" products.
Quietside has been described as a leading distribution channel for products for heating, ventilation and air conditioning, according to ZDNet. The company has also been Samsung's main distributor for HVAC products in the U.S. and Canada since 1997.
Under the new deal, Quietside will continue to operate at its headquarters in Dallas/Fort Worth, and Sang Lee, the company's founder, will remain its CEO. The company will also be given more access to Samsung's DVMS energy efficiency systems and other HVAC products. Samsung will invest in Quietside as a way to hire more staff and improve its infrastructure in the U.S.
The acquisition is the second made by the South Korean company within a week, following its purchase on Friday of SmartThings, a platform developer that creates apps that homeowners can use to control and keep track of automated devices, Fox Business reported. The details on the Quietside deal's price have yet to be revealed.
"Because air conditioning products are a necessity in all buildings, including homes and offices, this acquisition is expected to be of help to our future smart home business," Samsung said.
Samsung is looking to use its purchase of Quietside to make its sales operations in the U.S. stronger and also plans to release a new lineup of HVAC products, ZDNet reported.
