Google's Nest Labs is expanding its involvement in smart home technology, announcing Tuesday that it has partnered up with fan manufacturer Big Ass Fans.
The Kentucky-based company sells ceiling fans designed to adapt to their owner's preferences, according to Business Insider.
Big Ass Fan's SenseME fan will work with Nest's smart thermostat as part of the team-up. The fan is able to sense motion and change speeds so it can maintain the conditions that the owner wants.
Nest's Learning Thermostat gives users the ability to control the climate in their homes, CNET reported. With the new integration, called "Works with Nest," home owners will be able to use the SenseME app to control the basic functions of the Nest thermostat, such as turning the heat up and down. Users will also be able to receive in-app suggestions on better ways to use the two smart devices together.
Nest and Big Ass Fans are members of Thread Group, a coalition of tech companies that aim to create a standard for smart home tech.
Big Ass Fans said its team-up with Nest is expected to help consumers save up to 30 percent on costs for air conditioning, Business Insider reported. The app will also recommend users to turn up the thermostat, which could save users 5 percent on cooling costs for each degree raised.
"Our pairing with Nest brings real value by helping people reduce their air conditioning costs," said Carey Smith, founder of Big Ass Fans. "It's the easiest energy diet possible, because you don't even notice it happening. And that's really the whole goal of the Internet of Things- making life simpler for smart home consumers."
